Operation Rice Bowl
Every year Catholic Relief services puts on a program to help raise funds for our brothers and sisters in poverty overseas, this program is called Operation Rice Bowl.
Operation Rice Bowl is the official Lenten program of Catholic Relief Services. During lent small boxes are passed out and we are encouraged to pray with family and friends, fast in solidarity for those who go hungry, learn about those in need and offer contributions in our small boxes as a sacrifice for lent. Seventy-five percent of the money each community raises goes towards development programs of Catholic Relief Services that promote food security and sustainability. The types of programs that are funded are agricultural, water, microfinance, mother and child health, education, and HIV and AIDS programs. The other twenty-five percent of the money raised goes into our own community to support hunger and poverty alleviation efforts. Through participation in ORB we are helping those in need, not only through monetary contribution but also by learning about the struggle that they go through and by praying for them.
