Newman Leadership Institute
NLI focuses on the development of student character and theological education. The program will…
- Provide general leadership training with Catholic theological foundation
- Develop a community of student leaders in training
- Include skill training/case studies/internships/learning opportunities especially, but not exclusively, for parishes and other church related organizations; these leadership skills will be useful in business, non-profits, working in parishes, etc.
- Encourage leadership for the common good during their time at the University and beyond
Goals
By joining the Newman Leadership Institute, students will…
- Be able to explain basic Catholic theology and articulate a personal theology
- Gain experience in liturgical ministry roles
- Master organizational skills by organizing groups, facilitating meetings, and creating programs
- Improve interpersonal and inter-organizational communication skills
Time Commitment
The program is four semesters long, starting the spring semester. The theology classes (more details in Academics) are flexible for co-op years, study abroad, etc.
Scholarships
Students accepted into the program are awarded with a scholarship of $1,000 in installments throughout the four semesters (upon completion of each academic school year).
Academics
Students take Introduction to Catholic Theology A & B. A is taken in first semester (spring) of the program, and B is taken in the fourth semester (fall) of the program. Theology B focuses on social justice and Christian ethics.
Internships
Students typically begin their internship in the second semester of the program. Internships may include Newman House, church organizations, community, etc.
Community Building
Students will strengthen their relationships with their fellow peers by having dinner together on Fridays and Sundays (more play on Fridays and more prayer on Sundays). There will also be a retreat before classes start in the spring.
